1 results foundAuthor: Ozdemir, Habib Title: Compstat: Strategic Police Management for Effective Crime Deterrence in New York City Summary: This is a descriptive study of Compstat. It is a popular American police management model innovated in 1994 by then NYPD Police Commissioner. Compstat helps departments to control and decrease crime. In Compstat departments, middle and lower managers are more likely to have an organizational environment facilitating to share knowledge, ideas, experience and cooperation. In sum, it is a simplified but highly sophisticated police management model. It systemically produces crime prevention and public order maintenance strategies created mainly by mid-level managers. This paper examines the Compstat model, its implementation in the U.S. by using research data of the Police Foundation concerning Compstat and non-Compstat departmentsā strategic policing methods. Comparison of the crime statistics between New York City and the U.S. is asserted as appropriateness of Compstat as a strategic management tool in police administration for effective crime deterrence.
