In 2011 and 2012, the percentage of pre-trial prisoners increased more than the total prison population in Brazil, a population considered the fourth largest in the world. Objectives of the Project The Weaving Justice Project worked in two distinct areas. Firstly, it attempted to guarantee the prisoner immediate access to legal defense, to give orientation to the family, and to help the accused better understand and accompany his/her trial in order to more effectively exercise the constitutional right to defense. Secondly, it sought to show a profile of the people who are imprisoned, to identify the circumstances of their imprisonment, and to evaluate how their situations would have been different if public defenders were present at the moment of their entrance into the prison system.
