This approach was informed by a review of relevant research and qualitative interviews with key stakeholders, including strategic bodies, local authorities, police, third sector organisations, and organisations representing young people. This is particularly important piece of research given the high risks to children and young people who run away. Not only the risks to the young people whilst running away such as: sleeping rough or in unsafe places; sexual exploitation; physical or sexual assault; and/or criminal behaviour. But also the long term problems such as increased likelihood of substance misuse, mental health problems, teenage pregnancy, longer-term involvement in crime, as well as increased detachment from school and homelessness.
